reviews
Review: had some issues particularly with character motivation at key points (notes below) but overall an extremely well-told story. Many strands that all cohere together, good pacing, well-rounded characters.

26: lol why is kai suddenly in denial when he was the one that made the call to transform riku? i would understand if the decision was more panicked but it was pretty chill. i get its useful for recap exposition but the implementation is just sloppy. also david literally said they made a mistake keeping saya's past from her and then theyre repeat keeping riku in the dark... why? the real answer is that you have to draw it out for b plot conflict but it just doesnt make any sense narratively. LOOL the guys already dead why use your own blood?? also while we're criticizing the metaphysical family mumbo jumbo is very silly. 28: oh my god its so dumb. so her reason the chiropterins have to die is because they will hurt humans otherwise, okay fine. but then when there are chiropterins that don't need to kill humans, she still just stereotypes and wants them to die. same thing with when she found out she was a chiropractor: "oh no this means i'm evil" bro by your own criteria you're fine what is the issue. oh my god theyre just hard committing to braindead categorical thinking why. "it is my life purpose to kill chiropeterins" bro kill yourself why are you like this. 29: "we were never taught to work together????" you're working together right now?? also tho despite everything i've written so far being negative its actually an extremely good show and the multitude of storylines is very good. despite the sometimes frustrating logic the resulting pacing is very good, and the characters are all very well fleshed out. 31: lol what is the point of not telling saya about the invasion warning? 32: i really do not understand diva's motivations here. don't really like how riku is handled at all, and the whole "oopsie you forgot to turn on your blade" is very silly. weird ep that misses emotionally and dead-ends a lot of potential interesting things. (post-finish edit: still unclear why diva was motivated or even knew about getting pregnant with riku. very odd) 33: that's not how you help someone with their addiction lol. 35: good recovery arc, would feel a lot more appropriate if 32 was better. 37: soloman's motivations don't make much sense either to me with constantly leaking info and stuff. also still no answer as to why they can't just take saya's blood and put it in other weapons. (edit from later: actually i completely forgot about that one dance they had long ago, it now fits better, alright fair enough) 41: which chevalier mated with diva?? huh?? wait riku?? lol holy shit she raped the kid. still kinda unsure about 32 and diva's motivations but i suppose this might help a bit if explained more later. still i think the delivery was poor and sullied the emotional tenor even if it ends up being logical. 43: wait why are haji and solomon fighting? why does marriage exclude other relationships? confused. ?? why does it have to be your battle to fight alone? lose the pride and pull a light yagami and let your crusher do the dirty work 50: on the best reading of saya's concerns and motivations, the valiant speeches shouldn't do anything to move her position. the same old tired "i'll protect and take care of you and we'll be happy" do not address her motivation for wanting to genocide a species that is ontologically hostile to humans. (given, over the course of the show the "categorically hostile to humans" angled has been downplayed significantly as the conflict has almost been exclusively focused between supernatural beings, but nonetheless that is supposedly the rationale that even the show and saya seem to forget every time they receive minimal pushback. cheap and predictable haji not dying.
